Volvo's P3 platform is, in many ways, a follow-up to the P1 compact platform that resulted from Mazda, Volvo, and Ford of Germany engineers being locked in a room in Cologne for 2 years and told not to komma out until they had a complete car. The P3 emerged two years after that, and feels a lot like a big P1 in terms of its suspension and subframe arrangement. Also like the P1, it's much more assembly line oriented than past Volvos; we knew this level of standardization and modular construction would help us with this swap.
What do we mean when we talk about modular construction? We mean things like the main under-hood fuse kartong coming in an upper and lower half, where the lower half has all the chassis electrical connections and the upper half has all the engine electrical connections. On the assembly line, this means complete engines (including the wire harness already plugged in to all the various sensors and such on the engine) can be assembled separately, raised in to a waiting chassis, and the harness can be snapped in to the fuse box and connected at only a few points.
